Lucia Lo Bello

Professor, University of Catania, Italy,

IES Secretary, Chair of the IES DEI Subcommittee of the Membership Committee

Biography: Lucia Lo Bello (M’02–SM’09) is a tenured Professor at the University of Catania, Italy. She received the Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering in 1998. She was a Guest Professor with the University of Mälardalen, Sweden (2014) and a Visiting Researcher at the Seoul National University, South Korea (2000-2001). Lucia has 30+ years of research experience in the areas of real-time embedded systems, industrial and automotive communications. She authored more than 200 technical papers and one granted US patent. She is involved in national and international standardization bodies in the industrial communications area. Lucia is the PI for the University of Catania of several national projects, of international projects funded by the European Commission, and of several research grants with national and international companies. Lucia received the 2021 IEEE Rudolf Chope Research & Development Award and the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society 2008 Early Career Award. She is Associate Editor of several international peer-reviewed journals and regularly serves on the Technical Program Committee of IEEE Conferences, also as Program Chair or General Chair. Lucia is an active volunteer of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES). She is the IES Secretary (since 2020). Since 2023 Lucia is the Chair of the IES Subcommittee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion of the Membership Committee. From 2017 to 2022, as the IES Representative within the IEEE WiE Committee, Lucia started the “Women in IES” initiative and organized several WiE Forums and Workshops at the main IEEE Conferences, and events at schools and colleges, to inspire women and foster their involvement in Engineering.
